Rishi Nag

CEO, Creative Director and Lead Performer, Singing Science

Rishi Nag combined his lifelong love of science and passion for music to found Singing Science, composing musical mini-lectures and longer musicals for students and the general public. His background in genetics includes a decade as a bioinformatician and as Programme Manager for GA4GH, who develop and enable standards for discovery using genetic data. Putting this together with his love of writing and performing music resulted in Genomics! The Musical! – the first major show from Singing Science to be taken to the general public.

Genomics! The Musical! (The RAREfest Mix)

Genomics! The Musical! is a one person show where the fundamentals of genes and our DNA are explained using a series of ‘musical mini-lectures’. Ideas are introduced with words and then developed with catchy songs performed with a video backdrop providing further insights into the science of what makes us, us.

All done with a light touch of humour to provide an ideal family edutainment show!

Themes cover Mendel’s pea plant experiments, the gene-RNA-protein relationship, variation and the phylogenetic tree. The Mendel song is the proud winner of the Geekpop most contrived lyric award! For RareFest 2022 a specially adapted version of the show will be performed to look at some of the science associated with Rare Disease genetics.

My three wishes for the future of rare diseases are:
  • Increased contributions to genetic databases to facilitate discovery and cure;
  • Pathways to this to be easier to access, and;
  • The solutions available to us are made available to more people across the world.
