Kat Arney is an award-winning science writer, broadcaster and public speaker, and the founder and creative director of First Create The Media, a communications strategy and content agency specialising in life sciences. She is the author of three books: Herding Hemingway’s Cats: Understanding how our genes work; How to Code a Human; and most recently, Rebel Cell: Cancer, evolution and the science of life. Kat also presents the popular Genetics Unzipped podcast for The Genetics Society, and has fronted several BBC Radio 4 science documentaries including the recent series Ingenious, looking at the stories behind our genes.

Barbara McClintock – a brilliant geneticist and a wonderful character. 

Where is your favourite place in the world?
My bed! I am very tired after 6 months non-stop working on COVID. 

What is your greatest achievement?
My latest book, Rebel Cell: Cancer, evolution and the science of life. 

What is your wish for the future of rare disease?
That research would translate into meaningful improvements in wuality of life for people affected by rare diseases and their families.
